Martians Over Brooklyn

A letter from Laurie Bryant (the author of Martians):

Ms. Dres and the Dexter cast & crew of Martians Over Brooklyn:
I was forwarded a link to your production of my play and wanted to send my best wishes for successful run! I hope Martians has been as fun for your group to stage as it was for me to write and premiere in NY.

I must commend you on the detail of your set and costumes. From the photos it seems your group is top-notch. I wish I were closer so I could see it for myself. If you'd be willing to share any production photos or materials that I might post on my website promoting my plays, I'd be honored. And the promo graphic for the show is simply perfect! Love it. My compliments to your graphic artist.

A few fun facts about the show itself:
  • The show is set on Withers Street, Brooklyn, which is where my father grew up. He was on his stoop the night of the original broadcast and witnessed his neighbors reacting to the Mercury Theater show. That served as the inspiration for an article I wrote for Cricket Magazine, which became the impetus for the play.
  • The character of Pop was inspired by an actual photograph that ran in the newspapers the days following the 'hoax' of an ancient civil war vet who had made a bunker and carried a long rifle in defense of his little home for days after the martian threat was revealed to be fictional. (My school wouldn't have accepted a gun, so it became a broom, which I think is funnier anyway.)
  • Mona's story about refusing to switch seats on an airplane was an actual event that happened with my college roommate's mom. I held on to that story for over 20 years until Mona appeared. They were very similar characters.
  • The Martian queen and the costume we used was inspired from what is considered the first sci-fi movie, a Russian silent called Ailita, Queen of Mars.
  • Bamonte's restaurant is really on Withers Street. Very old school Italian. Very. To this day, I wouldn't recommend invading it. Good food, though.

If you enjoyed Martians, I have two other shows available, with another coming this year. The Ransom of Miss Elverna Dower is an award-winning comedy about two students who impulsively kidnap their hated teacher only to find the principal doesn't want her back. Unplugged is brand new, and follows the most wired town in America as they try to go without technology for a month to win a contest.

Break a leg this weekend! And thanks for allowing my show to be part of your drama program.
