Now in its fourteenth year, Dexter Drama Directing Series’ (affectionately referred to as “3D”) purpose is to showcase the power of student-driven work. All of the one-acts within this series are student-directed by upperclassmen and, as always for Dexter Drama, the productions are student-acted and student-crewed. We are very proud of this unique production that celebrates both student leadership and student writing; since its debut twelve years ago, the "3D" Series has always had at least one student playwright. We feel lucky to have students within Dexter who have the talent, drive, and ambition to meet this challenge and affirm the DDC's mission to encourage students to explore & experience all areas of theatre.

Free Penguin
Written and Directed by Alec Althoen
Stage Managed by Abby Fillion

Free Penguin

Free Penguin is a short story about arguing for the sake of argument. It follows everyday characters waiting for a bus when, out of the blue, the question is asked, “Hey, want a free penguin?” From there, it’s up to you. The characters argue and wonder, is there even a penguin in the box? Is there not? Why not open it? Why even open it? Maybe it will solve it? Maybe it won’t? This show dives deep into our own minds, and examines why we feel the need to disagree over such small things. Not all questions need to be questioned. No penguins were harmed in the making of this show.

Bloodbag

Bloodbag
Written and Directed by Juno Bursch
Stage Managed by Erin Hudson

Blood: the all-sustaining life force which we often take for granted. We often aren’t thankful for it until it’s scarce—which is the exact situation Olive the human finds themself in when they’ve been kidnapped by vampires! In Juno Bursch’s “Bloodbag”, the concept of humanity is challenged, as Olive comes face-to-face and toe-to-toe with creatures who are more interested in them as a food source than as a person. However, as Olive attempts to stave off their doom as a suppertime delicacy, they discover that these vampires are more human than they first considered. “Bloodbag” will have you wonder where the line between human and monster lies. Be aware that any media involving vampires will involve topics like blood, death, and violence.

Almost Maine
Written by John Cariani

Directed by Ella Smith and Kate Rossow
Stage Managed by Bridget Jordan

The musical “Thorns”, by Maria DeMerell is a dramatic one-act that tells the story of a mother-daughter relationship.  The story takes place in a flower shop, where a woman named Iris (40-45 years old) is sitting across from an elderly woman, named Dahlia.  Iris’ mother suffers from stage four cancer and Alzheimer’s.  With only weeks left, Iris is putting in an order for floral arrangements for the funeral. Iris is the only member of her family left to care for her mother, because her father was not present and she is an only child, so she is doing this alone.  Iris confides in Dahlia and reminisces about the life her mother led and the moments they shared together.  Dahlia tries to empathize with the weeping Iris, but the nonstop questions from Dahlia just reopen Iris’s emotional wounds that haven’t healed yet.Cast

Almost Maine

Welcome to Almost, Maine, a town that’s so far north, it’s almost not in the United States—it’s almost in Canada. And it almost doesn’t exist. It’s just…Almost. One cold, clear Friday night in the middle of winter, while the northern lights hover in the sky above, Almost’s residents find themselves falling in and out of love in the strangest ways. Knees are bruised. Hearts are broken. Love is lost, found, and confounded. And life for the people of Almost, Maine will never be the same. ALMOST, MAINE: It’s love. But not quite.
